I know many don’t know how they can be able to check their BVN with their mobile phone. But before we will go into that first lets talk about what BVN means.
BVN means Bank Verification Number. BVN Bank Verification Number is an 11 digit number that server as a universal ID for an Individual in all the banks or financial institutions in the country.
The federal government introduce the BVN because they are trying to stop the increased rate of Fraud and all forms of financial theft. The use of BVN can also help they reduce the ate of corruption among politicians. BVN also help the federal government to have tight security and easy assessment of information for all who use the Nigerian banking system as they try to upgrade and keep up with practices in developed countries, and also to capture wealthy individuals who use different bank IDs to perpetuate illegal deals and businesses.

The BVN became very important was when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) implemented its cashless policy, with a statement released by the CBN with regards to the BVN reading thus,
“Identity theft and fraudulent transactions have become a menace to the global banking system in recent times. In order to ensure trust relationship in the Nigerian banking system is not undermined, The Central Bank of Nigeria in collaboration with all Nigerian Banks launched Bank Verification Number (BVN) project in February 14, 2014. The BVN uniquely identifies every customer across the Nigeria banking industry using biometric details. It is a requirement for operating a bank account in Nigeria as no withdrawal shall be made on accounts without validated BVN (customers in diaspora accounts were exempted till January 31, 2016”
How To Check Your BVN With Your Phone
If you are in need of BVN urgently and you can’t remember the code, no need to worry because getting your BVN is very easy, just simply check the 11 digit code using your phone or any mobile device that accepts a sim card. This is good because you don’t need an internet connection before you can get your BVN. As long as the phone you are holding at that time can send and receive messages thats all you need. All you need is simply dial *565*0# on your mobile phone. You can use any network MTN, GLO, AIRTEL and 9mobile.
*565*0# is the universal code for checking or retrieving your BVN as no matter what the case may be, irrespective of the mobile network you are using.
Note; A cost of N20 would be deducted from your airtime after the transaction.
however after dialing, you recieve a message reading “Sorry your number is not enrolled on the BVN platform. Thank you for using BVN service. You have been charged N20 for this service,” know that either you have not registered or there was an issue with your BVN registration.
If fall in that category all you need to do is follow this step below.
1. visit any Nigerian bank of your choice
2. Request and fill accurately the BVN enrolment form
3. Submit the form
4. Have your biometric data taken i.e facial, thumb print
5. You will be given an acknowledgement slip with a transaction ID
6. Within 24 hours you’ll receive your BVN.
After registration, the BVN will be attached to your name across all banks or financial institutions in the country.
*565*0# is not the only code that works, some banks has their own special shortcodes that can allow their customers check their BVN on their phone. For exmaple, GTBank customers can simply dial *737*6*1# to check your BVN.
