Joke Silva is also known as Aunty Joke by the up coming actors and actresses in the industry, Joke Silva is an experience Nollywood actress who has been in the industry for a very long time.
Joke Silva was born in Lagos, she has four siblings, Her mother was a doctor who died in July 2015, Her father Chief E.O Silva was a lawyer. Joke Silva went to Holy Child College in Lagos. She is a graduate of the University of Lagos and the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London. while studying in the university she was part of a cultural group
that included the playwright Bode Osanyin and the singer Stella Monye.
Joke Silva left school for a year, during which time she began working as an actress.At that time she located to England to study drama at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London. At the beginning her parent were not very supportive of her decision to go into theater and become an actress but later on they became her favorite fan and they were happy for her when she became successful in her career. But During a slow period of her career, she returned to school, studying English at the University of Lagos.
Joke Silva began her career in the early 1990s, when she starred in numerous films and television series in both the English and Yoruba languages. One of her earliest roles was in the 1990 when she acted an English film Joke Silva appeared in Owulorojo, followed by a movie which was called Violated in 1995. Joke Silva starred with Colin Firth and Nia Long in the British-Canadian film The Secret Laughter of Women, in that movie she acted as Nene in the year 1998
The year 2002 Joke Silva starred in a movie called Keeping Faith with Bimbo Akintola. After the movie Akintola Said some nice things about Joke Silva, “Silva has done a lot, but it’s not even about the things that she did, it’s about the things she didn’t realize that she did” In that same year Joke Silva also co-produced and starred in The Kingmaker with Olu Jacobs. The following year she starred in a movie called A Husband’s Wife. in 2004 she acted in Shylock and A Past Came Calling.
Joke Silva won the award for the “Best Actress in a Leading Role” in the year 2006 at the 2nd Africa Movie Academy Awards for her role in Women’s Cot. That same year she starred along side Genevieve Nnaji in Mildred Okwo’s action thriller 30 Days, the movie received 10 nominations at the Africa Movie Academy Awards
The movie Amazing Grace was produced by Jeta Amata the movie was shot in Calabar Joke Silva was the voice behind the narration in the movie. The movie had a lot of critics, but the had 11 nomination for African Movie Academy Awards. The News noted Silva’s “song-like voice, which provides insight to the actions”
Joke Silva starred alongside Kate Henshaw-Nuttal, Michael Okon and Fred Essien in Ndubuisi Okoh in the movie called To Love and to Hold the movie came out in the year 2007. The following year Joke Silva won the award for Best Supporting Actress, when she acted as a grandmother” in White Waters. November 2008 Joke Silva said during an interview that “whenever she had to play an evil character in a film, she would pray and use Jesus as her ‘hedge'”. Joke Silva is among the actors and actress who have won an EMOTAN Award from African Independent Television (AIT) and the SOLIDRA Award for Visual Art.
Joke Silva acted alongside Nse Ikpe Etim, Wale Ojo and Lydia Forson in Kunle Afolaya in a romantic comedy movie which was titled Phone Swap. The movie was among the best films that came out that year, not only that the movie also received four nominations at the 8th Africa Movie Academy Awards, including a nomination for Best Nigerian Film. The movies also won the award for Achievement in Production Design. Joke Silva, in the year 2013 ievement in Production Design. In 2013, Silva took to the stage to appear in the Thespian Family Theater and Productions staging of the “Mad King of Ijudiya” at the Agip Hall of Muson Centre of Lagos at Christmas. Two of the shows were shown at 3pm and 6pm on 21, 22, 28 and 29 December, Vanguard described the shows as a “rich blend of folklore, traditional dance and music that naturally transports the audience to a typical African village setting”
Joke Silva and her met in year 1981 at the National Theater, Lagos. They both first met when they were both on the cast of Professor Wole Soyinka’s stage play, Jero’s Metamorphosis. During an interview her husband said that he knew he was going to marry her from that very first day he saw her.
The year 16th of November, 1985 They got married. They have two boys and she and her husband has been together for more than 30 years. The couple renewed their vows in the year 2011 in font of family and friends.
Joke Silva and her husband are business partners as they are the founders of the Lufodo Group. The group comprises an academy and a film production and distribution assets unit. She is the Director of Studies at the Academy.
Joke Silva is also the pioneering Managing Director of Malete Film Village which is association with Kwara State University.
Joke Silva was appointed as the organization’s goodwill ambassador by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in October 2012 In accordance with the UN policy of enlisting prominent figures in art, music, film, sport and literature to assist with their campaigns, Silva’s role was focused on her participation in the fight against human trafficking in Nigeria. Her work was base on fighting human trafficking base on the campaign, “I Am Priceless” which had also received support from the Nigerian authorities. Silva’s appointment was for a period of three years
.September 2016, Joke Silva was appointed by AIICO Pension Managers Limited (APML) as their brand ambassador.
The Federal Republic of Nigerian recognized The actress with the honorary award of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic on the 29th of September 2014. She received the award at the International Conference Center in Abuja.
